Good Friday was alsosingled out as an appropriate day for the work. On thelatter date churches would be filled with worshipers, andthere would be an opportunity for repeating on land thedeed achieved in sinking the Lusitania. According toplan the church of St. Gervais was struck, part of the roofbroken down, 76 persons killed and 90 wounded, of whom alarge part were women and children. With these exceptionsthe casualties from this gun were limited to rather smallnumbers, rarely over one, for each shell fired. It did nottake long to ascertain where the guns were stationed. Frenchaviators discovered them behind the St. Gobian Forest, notfar from La Fere.- 2 In the Paris lUitfttration of March .iOth—i.e, only seven days after thefiring began, a map was given showing the location of one gun-emplacement. 16
