English: The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra captured a stunning true-color image of the southern Kalahari Desert on January 15, 2024. The extremely arid Kalahari Desert stretches across the interior plateau of Southern Africa, sprawling across the eastern third of Namibia, southern Botswana, and part of the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. Most of the level plains of the Kalahari are covered with sand, with grassy shrubland in the desert savanna region. Long linear sand dunes found in the southern region, including Kgalagadi National Park, consist of about 50 percent grasslands, including Dune reed, Short Bushman, Sour, and Gha grass, and 5 percent trees, such as Camelthorn and Blackthorn. During the summer (November through April), thunderstorms and increased rain spur a green flush over the dunes and savanna, as evident in this image.
