.— We tell thy doom without a sigh, For thou art Freedoms now and Fames,One of the few, the immortal namesThat were not born to die. WASHINGTON AND HIS ARMY IN MORRIS COUNTY,NEW JERSEY, WINTER OF I77^77-1 BY THE REV. ANDREW M. SHERMAN. I have directed the three regiments from Ticonderoga tohalt at Morristown in Jersey (where I understand, about 800militia have collected), in order to inspirit the inhabitants, and,as far as possible, to cover that part of the country. Thuswrote Washington on the 20th of December, 1776, to the presi-dent of the United States Congress, from the west side of theDelaware River, opposite Trenton, New Jersey; whither onthe 8th of the same month, he had hastily retreated with hisdiminished and disheartened army. The letter, of which the above is but a portion, was writtenfrom the Keith house, situated on the road leading from Browns-burg, Pennsylvania, to what, in Revolutionary days was known »Delivered on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Society.

Through the courtesy ofRobert S. Dana, M. D., a resident of Morrisville, Pennsylvania,I have a pen and ink sketch of the Keith house, or Eagle Tavern,as it now appears, which is of no little interest to the lover ofRevolutionary history. The three regiments from Ticonderoga,it is particularly worthy of mention, composed the first body ofContinental troops to enter Morris County, New Jersey, inthe War of the Revolution. Preceding this locally notableevent, however, General Alexander McDougall, on the 14th ofDecember, 1776, visited Morristown, for the purpose, doubtless,of making the necessary arrangements for the accommodationof the Continental troops, which, under the command of ColonelVose, reached the county seat of Morris only three days later.
