AMERICAN IRISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY. 179 a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1878, whichprepared the present constitution of the State and was oneof its most valued and conservative counsellors. In 1879 hewas a candidate for Governor of California, but owing to unfor-tunate factional differences in his party, he was not elected.He died in 1890 at the age of seventy-four, universally belovedand respected. He was a devout Catholic, and noted for hischarities of large and valuable tracts of land to the Church.He led a pure Christian life, his name was the synonym of honesty,and when he passed away the people of his State mourned himas an irreparable loss to the community.
