We hear often and nuich as to its being the prov-ince of certain agencies to go in advance of thechurches; but we never yet heard of a great battlewon by skirmishers. All due honor to anybody andany agency that can do good in any measure andanywhere ; but let us not forget to recognize the wis-dom of the dixine plans in accordance with whicheverything effective in the kingdom of God mustspring from and be nourished by the church of theliving God. which is the pillar and ground of thetruth. RESULTS 8I also scattered over the land numerous and powerfulrevivals of religion, through which, in part at least,a moral sentiment was created, adequate to cope withthe powers of oppression, and to endure in the strug-gle. In our accounts of revivals, we say: so manvwere converted, so many have joined the church; asthough this were the whole of it; but here, as else-where, figures fail to tell the story. Follow those trulyconverted through their life-w^ork; see in the elevationand development of Christian character, in thechanges wrought in many homes, in society, in trades,professions, and the various callings of life, the influ-ence of genuine revivals of religion; and then youmay begin to estimate them. So we shall see howthe Congregational churches of low^a, and those ofall denominations, have been blessed, and made ablessing to the state, by the outpourings of Godsreviving spirit.
