In tbe male the centres of the feathers of thecrown are very dark, giving a scaly appearance to that part.The white streak under the eye in botli sexes is much smallerand duller than in the Himalayan bird. Iris dark brown ; bill light greenish ))lambeous, tippedand edged with black ; legs dark greyish pink. Wing ofthe male 3-13, of the female 3-37 in. This Bullfinch, which Ilickett and I bad previously con-founded with P. nipalensis Hodgson, inhabits tbe mountainsof north-western Fobkien. Ember)ZA passerina Pallas. Two examples, a male and female, were obtained in Marchat Kuatun in north-west Fohkien. Only one specimen—themale described by Martens, now in the Hamburg Museum—was previously known. The female is here described for thefirst time. Desc7iptioa,—Male. General colour slate-blue ; axillaries,abdomen, and under tail-coverts pure white; a band of whiteon the inner webs of the middle secondaries; remainder ofwing black, washed externally with slate-blue; rectrices,except the outer pair, also black, washed externally with slate-blue. Outermost rectrices with inner web white except fora longish triangular apical mark. Wing 260 in. Female. Head and hind-neck rufous; upper back rufousbrown, centre of the feathers darker, with blackish shaft-stripes ; lower back, rump, and upper tail-coverts slate-grey, the feathers a good deal edged with rufous brown ;Avings hair-brow
