r wellup increases in a cor-responding measurethe upward and for-ward movement ofthe limb as a whole. It conduces, indeed,to that free shoulder-play and fine kneeaction which alllovers of horses somuch admire andenjoy. The nagsman with his sharp l)it,the runner with hisraised hand proppingup the horses chin, and the coachmanwith his overdrawcheck-rein, all recog-nize the influence of an uplifted neck on the action of the fore-limbs; butit must be noted that while these artificial devices conduce to a morelofty action they at the same time shorten its range, and, by imposingrestraint on the head and neck, deprive the gait of the liberty and eleganceof movement displayed in a natural carriage. AVith the neck directed forward and carried in a more depending positionit is otherwise. Here the head hangs heavily on the neck, the shoulderaction is i-estricted, there is a lack of mobility, and the animal is heavy inhand, and may be hard in the mouth and diflicult to guide. Text Appearing After Image:
Ewe Neck 50 CONFORMATION AND ITS DEFECTS some consideration will require to be given to the neck in regard to itslength and volume. A neck too long or too short not only disturbs the harmonj^ of propor-tion, but impairs to a greater or less extent the mechanical properties of the machine. Un-A IW \ due lengtli is not infrequently asso-ciated with a slightmuscular develop-ment, oivinc tothis reoion a gaunt, slender appear-ance. Moreover,it possesses thefurther fault ofimposing on thefore extremities an excessof weight, thereby imped-action and increasingthe wear and tear of theimbs. More especially isthis the case where theneck is carried in a for-ward direction. To .someextent the disadvantao;e ofa long neck is compensatedby an erect carriage, which,by disjjlacing the centre ofgravity Ijackward, lightensthe burden in front, andat the same time gives aight and easy hold tothe rein. While recog-nizing the objectionablefeatures of excess, amplelength is nevertheless in-dispensable to spee
