bservations apply. The reverse con-dition, in which the face is hollowed, is sometimes spoken of as dislied (Plate Y, fig. 1). In some extreme instances of thislatter formation, function is more or les.sinterfered with under severe exertion, andthe powers of endurance are in somedegree curtailed. Moreover, such animalsare often said to be roarers in consequenceof the narrowed nostrils rendering theIjreathing loud and coarse. They are not,however, roarers in the proper sense ofthe term. The face may be rendered irregularand even unsightly by an undue promi-nence of the lower forehead, which itmay be noted is usually associated withnarrowness of the part and gives the face a heavy, ill-natured expres-sion. Especially is this so where the eyes are small and laid back inthe orbit. A rise in the face between the eyes (fig. 35), when consider-able, not onlv affects the contour of the face and detracts from its beauty,but is regarded by some as significant of temper if not of vice, the truth
