The Bars.—The bars are represented bythat small section of the lower jaw situatedin the male between the canine teeth and thegrinders. In the mare, where the former are absent, the space is larger,being limited in front by the corner incisors. The bars are covered by athin, sensitive membrane, on which the bit rests, and are frequently theseat of injury in pullers, often resulting in death and sloughing of aportion of the jaw-bone. They vary in form in different animals, in somethe edge of the bone is sharp and in others rounded. In the formercondition the pressure of the bit on the part is more severe in its effectsthan in the latter, and the difference in the mouths of horses is in a largemeasure due to this cause.
