umed are, however, really those of afamily wholly different, and not very closely resembling Cheevereven in appearance. They belong to Chaytor, a house eminent amongthe gentry of the county of Durham : viz. Per bend dancette argentand azure, three cinquefoils counterchanged. Crest, a stags headerased lozengy argent and azure, the dexter horn argent, the sinisterazure. should not have been omitted : and the trunk of a tree should be described as lyingfessways: for usually armorial trunks of trees are upright. 1 Cotton Mather himself says (i. 443) : It was at a small town called Lowton inthe county of Lancaster, anno 1596, that so great a man as Mr. Richard Mather wasborn, of parents that were of credible and antient families. And in the Life ofRichard Mather (1670) it is stated, 11 His parents, Thomas and Margaret Mather, were of ancient families in Lowton aforesaid, but by reason of some unhappy mortgagethey were reduced unto a low condition as to the world. On the next tomb, that of David Wood 1762, are carved, not thearms of Wood (which are said to be a lion rampant), but those ofthe Governor of the province, Sir William Phipps. The Honble. Thomas Greaves, Esq. departed this life in his sleepon the 19th of June, 1747, eetatis 63. He was a Beloved Physician,an Upright Judge, and a Wise and Good Man. There is an accountof this family, of which the name is frequently spelt Graves, in Fro-thinghams History of Charlestown. We find an eagle displayed borne, with various distinctions of thefield, &c, by several families of Graves and Greaves. The little birdin the corner is doubtless intended as a martlet for difference, andshould therefore be shorn of his feet. The arms of Foster on the gravestone accompany several records ofthat family, one of which names the Honble. Eichard Foster, Esq. whodied August 29, 1774, aged 82 years, having sustained the office ofHigh Sheriff for the County of Middlesex for many
