he docks which characterize the com-mercial seaports of Europe are made totally unnecessary, andthe universal system of high dues which they involve isavoided—the wharfage expenses being confined here to areasonable charge for the use of a very economically con-structed series of wharves and piers—we see at once the greatpreponderating influence in our favor from a strictly com-mercial standpoint. But even from a commercialpoint of view we must alsoconsider the advantages offered by the elevated ridges whichseparate the valleys, so favorably situated for commerce, asadmirable places of residences for the operators in the facto-ries, and persons employed in commercial pursuits. Theseridges are salubrious, and, in many instances, very picturesqueand attractive. Their immediate proximity to the great com-mercial highways referred to, save both time and expense ingoing from home to business for all whose employment lies inthat direction, along the immediate lines of traffic. It is estimated that eight millions of persons are immedi-ately connected with the business of the Metropolis. Thenearer these eight millions can get to their places of employ-ment, and, at the same time enjoy the comforts and well-beingof salubrious homes the better it will be for the entire com-munity, and, therefore, it is in the development of this newand most attractive region, with its magnificent system ofgrand parks, and its wonderful hydrographic features, thatwe must endeavor to exercise a wise judgment, and an un-equalled skill.
