| Description |
Inner Gorge of the Grand Canyon below can now be seen from the switchbacks of the Kaibab Trail. The Great Unconformity is most visible on the far wall at the corner in the river. The unconformity is precisely wherever the bottom of the layered rocks are in contact with the top of the gnarly rocks. The Grand Canyon is a mile deep from rim to river and this overview is near the top. Nicely layered Paleozoic strata comprising the past 500 million years towers for a half mile above all the older, beat-up stuff underneath. About one billion years of time are missing between gnarly Precambrian rocks of the Inner Gorge and layered Paleozoic rocks above. The poorly exposed unconformity down below will take a couple of steps to cross when walking along the trail. But wherever the Great Unconformity is exposed in a vertical cliff face, you can put your fingertip on a billion years and maybe ten vertical miles of rock long gone. whoof. |
