Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Gateway to Freedom Monument in Detroit, Michigan, in front of the Detroit River, with a view of Windsor, Canada.jpg |
English: It is an international monument built in honor of the slaves who used the Underground Railroad to escape from the Southern slave states, and eventually, the U.S. entirely. They were on their way to Windsor in Canada.
The former slaves were pressured to leave Detroit because of the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which meant they could no longer stay in the United States without fear of being rounded up and returned to a life of slavery. |

There is another monument across the river in Windsor, Canada, that is called the Tower of Freedom. It depicts a more joyous event where refugees are seen cheering and celebrating after having finally reached true safety in Canada.
