s being worshipped by Indians isMichelia champaca (MagnoliacetE), the Chum-paka of the Hindoos. It is cultivated commonlyin India for the powerful fragrance of theflowers. The tree is sacred to Vishnu, and istherefore an object of superstitious regard onthe part of the Hindoos, who adorn their darkhair with its rich orange-coloured flowers. Theroot, like all parts of the tree, has bitter pro-perties, and is used medicinally. There aremany varieties, and some are cultivated, thoughrarely, in English hothouses. Communications Received —H.
