Dur-ing his tenure of office as Chief Engineerhe discharged his duties to the completesatisfaction and great advantage of thedepartment. On the 7th of February, 1852, Messrs.Case and Harris also resigned, in conse-quence of which Mr. McKibbin becamefirst assistant and Messrs. James A.Hankman and Gardiner P. Kingslandwere elected second and third. All ofthese officers devoted much time to theproper development of the system andsucceeded in raising it to still higherstandards. On the 8th of April, 1852, the FireDepartment obtained a new ordinancefrom the city authorities during the lO SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN Mayoralty of C. J. Brenham. Underthis ordinance the department was re-constructed by the creation of a board offire wardens, consisting of the three as-sistants and the secretary of the board of them, and discover and have punishedany violation of the various ordinancesfor the prevention of future conflagrations.At the annual election of December6, 1852, Mr. Hossefross was re-elected

Elected December 6, 1851, and served until his term expired, October i, 185) of delegates and superintended by theChief Engineer, with such police juris-diction over the respective fire districtsas to allow them to examine all places inwhich fires were used, ascertain whetherdanger was to be apprehended from any chief by a handsome majority, andMessrs. Charles P. Duane, A. R. Simonsand E. A. Ebbets chosen assistants.Owing to private business matters neces-sitating Mr. Hossefross presence in theEast he resigned his office. Charles P. SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN II Duane was elected to succeed him inDecember, 1853; Messrs. Edward A. Eb-betsbeinc( first assistant, Joseph Capprisesecond and Charles S. Simpson third. In 1854 Mr. Duane was again chief,with J. Capprise first assistant and W.Free second assistant, and F. Wheelerthird assistant. In 1855 James E. Nuttman becameChief, W. Free first assistant, J.
