Description
English: 18th century (ca 1750) Japanese Prints and Drawings Book, woodblock on paper (ukiyo-e)

Label Copy: This sample book was published in the city of Osaka, and it contains black-and-white copies of paintings by popular Chinese and Japanese artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Among the many subjects included are works of natural history, a genre that, in Japan, ultimately was derived from Chinese bird-and-flower paintings and printed manuals. On this page the Japanese artist Chokuan renders a hawk and a pine tree in a uniquely Japanese vision. The page on the right provides translations of Chinese seal script in updated characters, demonstrating the interest among merchant-class people of learning the ancient script.
