Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Decapitator Moche.jpg | A reproduction of a Moche statue on display at the Army Museum in Stockholm. The translation of the caption in the background is as follows: "THE DECAPITATOR" A ferocious mythological being from the Moche culture in Peru (c. 500 BC). In his right hand he is holding a "tumi" – a ritual sacrificial knife. At the top of Moche society reigned warrior-priests who presided over sacrificial ceremonies where prisoners of war were decapitated and cut up, after which their blood was greedily drunk. The Moche people possessed no writing system, but their artwork is unparalleled in pre-Columbian America. In the 8th century AD the culture disappeared without explanation. Sculpture after a contemporary clay vessel from Peru. |
