The one point perspective of Cloister Mandapam of Thanjavur big temple, Tamilnadu, India.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The boundary of the Thanjavur Big temple has a corridor-like structure which is the Cloister Mandapam which contains several cuboid vertical stone pillars, constructed around 1000 years ago by the king Raja Raja Cholan.

This Cloister is forming a continuous and solid architectural barrier that effectively separates

the world of the monks from that of the serfs and workmen, whose lives and works went forward outside and around the cloister. In some parts, manuscripts were written in and around the cloister. Four faced Relief arts and stone cuts are found in each cuboid shaped pillar on which the stone beams are rigidly and horizontally laid. It usually indicates that it is part of a monastic foundation. One of its advantages was that it was roofed but provided with ample light. Here I present “one point perspective” of this cloister.
