Rob was just in time to catchsight of a motor boat, seemingly a fast one, slip-ping behind the spot of land. At the same instant a figure rose from thegrass almost in front of them. It was Bartonthe machinist. He had apparently been concealedin the grass, and had not calculated on the boysdiscovering him. Well, what are you after now? Spying onme again, eh? he snarled angrily. I dont know why you should say we werespying on you, rejoined Rob, unless you areup to something wrong. What do you mean? asked Barton, steppingquickly toward him as if to strike him. The mans hand was upraised, but the deter-mined way in which Rob met his angry glarecaused him to drop it.
