For thisdecisive action Captain Lyon was commis-sioned a brigadier-general by the President. Movements of General Lyons Army. Satisfied that the desire of the southernparty in Missouri to remain neutral was buta pretext to gain time to arm the State for aunion with the Confederates, President Lin-coln determined to compel all the State forcesnot in the federal service to disband. An in-terview was held at St. Louis on the eleventhof June between Governor Jackson and Gen- *eral Lyon, now commanding the federaltroops in Missouri. Governor Jackson de-manded that no United States forces shouldbe quartered in or marched through Mis-souri. General Lyon refused to comply withthis demand^ and insisted that the State force?
