Text Appearing Before Image:
isdoes not settle the question, for the captain feelshis moral power diminished. He cannot nextday with a clear conscience read and pray withhis officers, nor call all hands together next Sab-bath to hear the word of God read. Thus nearly all that is done for the moral im-provement of sailors in port is neutralized byone act of disobedience to God. In New Bedford, something is attempted forthe good of the sailor. The Sailors Home is INTRODUCTION. 23 well conducted. The Port Society sustains theBethel and its indefatigable minister. All theBibles needed for the ships come from the NewBedford Bible Society. But something furtheris required to induce habits of Bible reading onboard ship. Let owners and others think of someof the hints given above. If this volume, now presented to the public, containing a narrative of so much interest, willimprove the condition of the weather-beatensailor, and promote the honor of God, our desireis accomplished. J. Girdwood. New Bedford, Mass., June, 1857.
