We are told that there is more than a suggestion of ancient Rome inseveral New York streets: The colonnade of the new postoffice, with itsfull score of great columns, worthy of Rome at its height; this colonnadehas been carried out with a classic severity and correctness which woulddoubtless have won high praise from Roman critics; the colonnade beforethe new municipal building would have looked well facing the Romanforum; the facade of a great bank on Broad street and a familiar block onLafayette place hold the same suggestion; the doorways, windows andother details of many modern office buildings have been so closely copiedfrom famous Roman originals that a citizen of ancient Rome would feel verymuch at home in such surroundings. The circular, or elliptical court house, a massive structure, at least mightsuggest the coliseum to Caesar; and the Broadway policemen, standing likeRoman senators, would add verisimilitude.—Improvement Bulletin.
