Oh, no, for Itaught him to keep his claws in when he struck me.Another thing I taught him to do was to come when Icalled him, and to stay where he was when I didnt.He had a way of coming into the kitchen every time Iwent there, in hope of getting something to eat. Soevery time he came where I didnt call him I threwwater on him. Pretty soon, when I went out of thekitchen, I would find him sitting on the door sill. Iwould whip him for disobeying me. Then, at other times, when I had made him go out ofthe kitchen, he would steal softly to the kitchen door,stick his head in, and stay that way till I looked up.Then he would draw his head back, then put it in againafter a while, till I made a jump at him ; then he wouldfly into the dining-room, and stay there until I calledhim to breakfast or supper, whichever it happened tobe. Although Tom is very mischievous, I think a greatdeal of him, and would not part with him if I could helpit.

His Highness, the Prince of Wales, andhis lovely Princess both exhibit their dogs at all the greatshows, while the names of Dukes and Duchesses,Lords and Ladies, can be found in any of the catalogueswhere household pets are entered for competition. While the proportion of exhibitors of high-bred dogsis vastly in excess of those who show cats of high de-gree, still at the great cat shows royalty bends itself,and its possessions of Angoras, Persians, &c, are bas-keted off to the great cities, there to compete with thelesser lights of the world, and when prizes are won theowners
