es Seneca alongthe west side of the square; St. Clair is parallelto Superior nearer the lake; Water Street runsfrom Superior near the river to the Uniondepot, as does Seneca to the other end. Fromthe southeast corner of the square starts theworld-famed Euclid Avenue, once said by trav-elers to be the most beautiful street in theworld; named from the town of Euclid on theeast, to which it is the highway, and as a lakeroad extending to Erie, Pa., 95 miles. It widensfrom 80 to 99 feet, and beyond the businessportion is lined with splendid and costly stonemansions set from 200 to 400 feet back fromthe street, amid superb grounds, estates* ratherthan mere dwellings. It turns east along alow ridge, but beyond Wade Park again turnsnortheast. Both Superior and Euclid run tothe city limits; parallel to the latter on thesouth is the only less fine Prospect Street,extending to Willson Avenue, itself a notableresidence Street, as are Case Avenue west ofWillson from the lake to Kingsbury Run, East

GROVER CLEVELAND, TWENTY-SECOND AND TWENTY-FOURTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. CLEVELAND Madison a mile east of Willson and parallel toit, and a number of shorter streets. On the SouthSide (Brooklyn), Jennings Avenue, reachedby the Central Viaduct, is the chief residencestreet. The streets in general are wide, andso heavily shaded with great trees as to havegiven Cleveland the name of the Forest City?The houses are nearly all detached, either tene-ments for the poor or flats for the richer beingstill comparatively few. Municipal Conditions.— The light porous soilmakes excellent drainage, and there is a goodsewerage system. The death rate in 1902 was17.1.
