The value of the work, saysa recent authority, as a candid narrative and aninvaluable work of reference, has continuallyrisen as investigations into original materialshave proceeded. Burnet, Jacob, American jurist: b. New-ark, N. J., 22 Feb. 1770; d. Cincinnati, Ohio, 10May 1853. Admitted to the bar in 1796, he re-moved to Cincinnati, then a village with about500 inhabitants, and was a member of the ter-ritorial government from 1799 till the estab-lishment of a State government in 1803. In1821 he was appointed judge of the supremecourt of Ohio, and was elected United Statessenator in 1828. Burnet was elected a memberof the French Academy of Sciences upon therecommendation of Lafayette, and published in1847 a volume of Notes on the NorthwesternTerritory.^ He was prominent in civic enter-prises in Cincinnati for over half a century, as-
