s larch : in the northern parts ofthe United States it is commonly called hack-matack, but larch is the most correct. It isfound in Maine and Vermont, but it is mostcommon still farther north,—in Canada andNova Scotia. In the Middle States it isscarcely ever seen. It is a noble tree to lookupon, with a straight slender trunk, nearly a 250 CONVERSATIONS. hundred feet high, and three feet in diameter :the leaves are shaped hke tliose of the balmof Gilead, but they are collected in bunches,united at the root and spreading out at theother end, like the sticks of a fan; this ar-rangement of the leaves gives to the tree asingular and pleasing appearance. The conesare about the size of an acorn, and veryabundant. The wood is better than that ofany of the pines or spruces, uniting greatstrength with durability almost equal to thatof the cypress: its only fault is its weight,which makes it unfit for masts.
