Villa revolted from Carranza andorganized so strong a following against himthat for a time it seemed that the army ofCarranza would be destroyed. But gradu-ally Villas forces began to disintegrate andCarranza obtained such control over thecountry as to lead President Wilson to recog-nize his government, October 19, 1915. During the early part of 1916 the UnitedStates and Mexico were on the verge ofwar. The massacre of American citizens onboth sides of the international boundaryby Villa bandits and the raid on Columbus,N. M., on March 8, caused President Wilsonto order American troops into Mexico inpursuit of the bandits.
