MADISON 2214 MADONNA are related in the article War of 1812.) Onland the Americans suffered a number ofhumiliating reverses, and saw their nationalcapitol burned. At sea their ships proved inevery way the equal of those of the mistressof the seas, and on the whole honors wereabout even. Both sides were glad to eon-elude peace, and a treaty was signed atGhent, on December 24, 1814. Madisons second tenn was marked by astrengthening of Federal authority. Thoughtheoretically the Anti-Federalists were op-posed to centralization of power, they virtu-ally adopted the nationalist policies of theFederalists, and when Madison went out ofoflBee there was practically but one party. The Federalists, who had opposed the war, lost all public confidence through holding aconvention at Hartford (Dec. 1814-J an.1815), at which, it was erroneously said, theyadvocated secession. Subsequently they dis-appeared as a distinct party. In 1816 Madi-son gave his approval to the chartering of asecond United States
