Ashe-ville, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is oneof the most popular winter resorts in theSouth. Mineral Resources. The mineral productshave a total annual value of about $3,500,-000. Clay and stone products lead in valueof output. The state ranks first in the pro-duction of kaolin, used extensively in themanufacture of white earthenware, porcelainand wall tile. Its quarries yield granite, lime-stone and sandstone to the value of nearly$1,500,000 a year. Gianite almost as whiteas marble is quarried at Dunns Mountain.North Carolina is the first mica state, its whitemica being equal in quality to that found any-where in the world. Corn Populations Before the discovery of gold in California,North Carolina was an important state in theproduction of this metal, and though its out-put is at present not large compared withthat of the great gold-mining states, thisstate still holds first rank in the East. Theyearly output is over 6,000 ounces. Otherminerals include magnetite ore, mined inAvery County and regarded a valuable sourceof pig iron; talc, which is widely distributed;zircon and monazite, used in the manufac-ture of incandescent light mantles; copper,lead, feldspar, abrasive garnet, gems, quartzand a small quantity of silver. Fisheries. The sounds and estuaries alongthe North Carolina coast are valuable fish-ing grounds, and supply large quantities ofshad, oysters and herring. Diamond-backterrapin, turtles, alewives, clams, bluefish,bass and mullet are also caught in payingquantities. The state is giving systematicattention to oyster culture and to the study ofthe shad and terrapin fisheries. Agriculture. Abo
