An electric rail-way extends down the gorge to near Lewis-ton, following the foot of the cliff, and crossesto the Canadian shore, which it follows backto the city. The lower suspension bridgenow connects these lines; the visitor can makea circuit of the region, passing on one sideon the top of the bluff and on the other atits foot, thus obtaining excellent views of allpoints of interest. The Niagara gorge near the Falls isspanned by three bridges; the first is a steelarch bridge for carriages and electric ears,about one-eighth of a mile below the Falls;the second, the cantilever bridge of the Mich-igan Central Railway, about two miles belowthe Falls; and the third, the steel railroadbridge of the Grand Trunk Railway, whichwas erected to replace the old suspensionbridge, the first large structure of its kind

The Whirlpool may be viewed in a thrill-ing but safe ride on an aerial cable railway,1,800 feet long, built in 1916 on the Canadianshore. It is the only one of its kind inAmerica. In the passenger car twenty-fourpeople can be seated and twenty others mayfind standing room. Harnessed for Industry. The building ofpower houses and factories along the shoresof Niagara River and Falls threatened for atime to destroy the grandeur of the view, byturning the main eun-ent from its naturalchannel, leading over the Falls, to undei-ground sluiceways and tunnels, where it gen-erated power. The amount of water thusused had already made an appreciable dif-ference in the volume of the cataract, andplans weie completed for large extensions ofthe plants, when by a joint effort of the gov-ernments of the United States and Canada in1910 pro\asion was made for rest
