without losing truth to nature), parts of different photo-graphs can be combined, such as using the distance from onephotograph and the foreground from another, introducingfigures or animals in a way that would be difficult, if not im-possible, by photographic means. The values may be alteredand contrasts heightened or subdued so as to improve the com-position and effect. We often come across a subject that just falls short of a per-fect picture owing to wrong lighting, or the presence, of someobtrusive object which spoils the whole thing. We can makeour snap-shot in a moment at times when it would be impossi-ble to make a sketch, and elaborate our picture from it as apainter does from his sketch or study. On looking over our photographs made as mere recordson a holiday tour we often discover small parts that will makeexcellent pictures if taken from their surroundings. Some people recommend drawing with pen and ink over aphotograph and then with a suitable reducer dissolving away 254

Figure i. Illustrating article The Camera as a Sketch-book, by J. E. Adnams. 255 the photographic image and leaving the drawing. This is notalways satisfactory, because it is difficult to judge of the ap-pearance of the drawing as it proceeds, and when the photo-graphic image is removed the drawing does not look so wellas we expected. It is better to make a separate drawing. Another process which seems to have possibilities in it, isthat which we show in our illustration (Figure i), where apen and ink drawing is made over a pale bromide enlargementforming a combination in which the middle tones are providedby the photographic image and the detail by the drawing. If you are in the habit of making presents of your artisticattempts you will find that friends are more likely to appre-ciate and keep a drawing than a photograph, as they considerit has something more personal about it and is less mechanical.
