ast, acurious conglomeration of red roofed houses huddled togetheron a sloping cliff facing the North Sea with no streets, butonly narrow cobbled footways wandering here and there andup and down among the houses, with a wider path than theothers serving as a high street leading down to the seashorewith its Hard coils of cordage swarthy fishing nets.Anchors of rusty fluke, and boats updrawn. (Enoch Arden) Before the advent of the railway about thirty years ago thislittle place was practically shut off from the rest of the world,as there is no direct road to the village, and in the old smug-gling days the fish caught and the goods imported withoutpaying duty were carried across the open moors to other placeson horseback and exchanged for luxuries and necessaries. Con-tact with the outer world is already altering the character ofthe place. It is beginning to be sought out by visitors and willin time perhaps become a fashionable watering place, and thengood-bye to its picturesqueness. 258
