It is suggested that you do not look at the lens in makinga self portrait, except you be in a laughing group, all of whomare making eyes at the unwinking one of brass and glass. Thelittle pictures reproduced here—all of them made with thestring, one by hand, and two with the moving foot—are nat-ural as much for the apparent utter unconsciousness of thecamera as from any other feature. A spool of fish line, some rubber bands, and two screweyes form a very small and certainly absurdly simple outfit tocarry along when going afield with kodak and tripod. Yet itis more efficient than any affair of wheels and springs youcould make, requires little skill and almost no trouble, needs,indeed, but the knowledge of the simple trick to be a great suc-cess—and that knowledge you now possess. 132
