ALLYN, M.D. Now, to understand and appreciate the historical develop-ment of Englands great cathedrals and abbeys, a special studyof the subject must be made before the journey. This neednot be so extensive as exact and definite. The work extendsthrough five hundred years and is easily divided in structureinto about four periods. If the few dominant characteristicsof each of these four periods are carefully mastered, everyarch, window or door will oflfer an intense historical interest onevery turn. The oldest monument in England is the Stonehenge, a rem-nant of a great people so ancient as to have no history, no name. 272
