e feeling expressed by the artist;but as a rule I cant make that class of work. Perhaps I was unfortunate in my beginnings. Not longafter some one who little realized what he was doing put thefirst kodak into my hands, I showed some of my prints tO apublisher. He said that was just the kind he wanted forhis magazine. Those will reproduce, he declared, so thereader can tell what they are. So I was early initiated into themethod of making prints that would reproduce, and I have 75 followed that scheme more or less ever since. In fact, I doit now; consequently, what I am about to say is a bit ofpersonal experience based upon this fact. Probably in the vicinity where each amateur photographerlives there is something different from anything anywhereelse. Perhaps this assertion requires modification; but gen-erally speaking this is true. I live in New Jersey, that north-ern section bordering on the Hudson River originally settledby the Dutch. ALLBEE. stone houses constructed from one hundred and fifty to twohundred years ago. Early in my photographic career theirpicturesque appearance attracted me and I began to photo-graph them. I have now something like one hundred andfifty negatives of these structures, with more or less extensivehistories regarding each one, who lived in them, where theirchildren went and all the data I can gather. I have beensomething like six years getting these negatives and informa-tion together, nor is the work done yet, because almost everyday someone supplies something further about some of them.In other words, I have tried to master these houses, both 76
