ternoonwith me. We engage in commonplace conversation, and thechild, left to its own devices, usually becomes interested insome toy left enticingly near. Then the camera is quietly ad-justed, and with the mother sitting near, the rest is compara-tively easy. Let me emphasize the word quietly in connec-tion with making preparation for the exposure. It is my opin-ion that the less excitement and confusion in the presence ofnervous children, the better the results. INIy aim is to makethem feel that nothing unusual is happening, and whenfriendly relations have been established between us I begin towork for the desired expression. Often the parents are the cause of a state of nervousness,by previously impressing upon the child the importance ofthe occasion. Especially is this true if all the available rela-tives are summoned to accompany them to the studio. If par-ents could only be educated to co-operate with the photog-rapher—but it is up to some one to write a book on thatsubject. 304
