may notice, that the intensity of light variesconstantly from hour to hour and from minute to minute; butit is impossible for the human eye to know its quality. Of the colors into which the prism divides light, the yellow-orange impresses our eyes most powerfully, giving us our senseof illumination, but it is the violet, and even the invisible ultra-violet rays, which affect the chemical changes in the plate andmake the negative. What, then, is necessary to make correct exposures, is toknow, not what the Hhiminatiou might be on any parallel of lati-tude on some date and hour, but just what the strength of thephotographic light is upon our subject at the instant of ex-posure. - Fortunately with a silver paper as an actinometer, the chem-ical activity of any light is determined with the greatest ease.Since this light factor is so easily and accurately determined,it seems little less than folly to juggle with exposure tables.This attempt to arrest the attention of our amateur, and to 234
