It was easyfor us to believe ourselves among thefavored of the gods, for what a veri- shades, and the fading many-coloredwoods, with every hue from wan de-clining green. Beach, maple and su-mach, responsive to the first gentlebreath of chilling frost, were suffusedwith sentient blushes that made thislandscape gem of purest ray serene remind one of a mammoth brooch inwhich some rare old grey-green agatehad found a setting of iridescent jewels.One hundred yards back from the lake

The Lake and Panther Rock by Moonlight. table little haven of rest was ourdestination! A more beautiful sheet ofwater I have never seen. As we stoodupon the club house portico that after-noon and viewed the entrancing pros-pect, we gazed upon its placid waters as in a looking-glass, which mirroredits beautifully wooded shores in themagic resplendence. vSummer had re-signed her sunny robes, while Au-tumn, nodding oer the yellow plain,had imbrowned the russet mead andcountry round with ever deepening stood the club house, literally embow-ered in grand old forest trees. Drawas we might upon our imaginationswe could not have planned a more per-fect retreat than this, our temporaryabode, afforded us. What a perfectsense of delight and home-like comfortdid that magnificent old fire place, withits ample, blazing fire of hard-woodlogs inspire, for the afternoon waschilly, as we waited to be shown to ourrooms by the stewardess, and what de-licious odors were occasionally wafted 14 TJie Ajiieri
