Summary[edit]

Description Lot-2947-6: This picture shows part of the main engine of a Victory ship. This is a geared turbine of 8,500 horsepower. Steam from the boilers is forced through a small jet against the blades of the turbine, turning it at very high speed. This speed is reduced through special gears so that the propeller of the ship turns at a slower speed but with great power. The propeller drives the ship at 16 ½ knots (about 19 land miles) an hour. Image is a halftone. U.S. Marine Commission Photograph, 1946. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. (2016/07/01).
