Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Taff Vale Railway Hurray Riches Class "O1" 17.5" 0-6-2T No.28 (later GWR No.450) built in the TVR's own Workshops at Cardiff West Yard in 1897 (Works No.306). In 1927 it was sold to the War Department becoming WD No.70205 "Gordon" and used on the Longmoor Military Railway. In 1947 it was sold to J.N. Connell's South Hetton Colliery, the following year becoming NCB (Durham Division) No.67 "Gordon". In 1955 it was rebuilt with new tanks but of exactly the same TVR pattern. In 1960 it was withdrawn and bought by the BTC for preservation, going to BR(WR)'s Caerphilly Works which unfortunately closed in 1962 without getting around to restoring No.28! It was then moved to Swindon Works but nothing was done and finally to Stratford Works, where nothing was done! It then returned to the site of Caerphilly Works, which was now part of the Harold Wilson Industrial Estate where it was finally being restored at the time this photo was taken in 10/72. The fact that No.28 was in virtually original condition after 63 years of hard work is a testimony to the quality of West Yard's workmanship. Scanned slide.
