Description
English: Swirling filigrees of sea ice float over the waters in the Gulf of Kamchatka in early March 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image ice in the Gulf of Kamchatka on March 1. As early spring blows warmer temperatures across the frozen Kamchatka Peninsula, the sea ice begins to soften and slowly melt. As ice softens, the action of wind as well as the gentle pull of the ocean currents carries it over the surface of the ocean. The resulting swirls and curls can be very beautiful when viewed from space.
