English: Swahili women with a fetish, Zanzibar.
The "fetish," which the women hold, guards their happiness and keeps off the spirits of evil. Only upper-class women wear the masks shown, which are made of leather and beads on a wooden frame. The fashion is derived from the traditional usage of Moslem women, who must keep their faces covered when abroad. Deutsch: Suaheliweiber aus Zebsibar mit ihrem Fetisch, der ihnen Glück bringen und die bösen Geister vertreiben soll. Die Masken, die sie als Ersatz für die Gesichtsverhüllung der Muselmaninnen tragen, sind aus Leder und Perlen auf hölzerner Unterlage angefertigt. |
