Summary[edit]

Description

On 22 December 1914, Mr F.E. Willis of Mayfield Road, Birkenhead wrote the Defence Department with some startling news – he had discovered a German spy ring in Auckland. ‘I am in possession of information pointing to a German spy system in operation’ wrote Willis to the Minister of Defence, James Allen. Having visited the Defence Department and the New Zealand Police, Willis was now writing to the top and was prepared to ‘come to Wellington if necessary.’

The military acted swiftly. After interviewing Mr Willis and learning of unauthorised signalling between Birkenhead, Pine Island and Kumeu, an investigation was launched. But the spy system turned out to be ‘the light of a lantern of an inhabitant visiting his hothouse at night.’

This is the letter written by Mr Willis to the Minister of Defence – one of many similar letters written by concerned citizens during the First World War. ‘The Police state they believe Mr Willis was an inmate of an asylum some time previously’ read the final page of the file: ‘the war seems to have preyed on his mind and he is full of suspicions.’
