On 22 December 1914, Mr F.E. Willis of Mayfield Road, Birkenhead wrote the Defence Department with some startling news – he had discovered a German spy ring in Auckland. ‘I am in possession of information pointing to a German spy system in operation’ wrote Willis to the Minister of Defence, James Allen. Having visited the Defence Department and the New Zealand Police, Willis was now writing to the top and was prepared to ‘come to Wellington if necessary.’ The military acted swiftly. After interviewing Mr Willis and learning of unauthorised signalling between Birkenhead, Pine Island and Kumeu, an investigation was launched.
