Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Surviving platelayer hut beside the Mawddach Trail. There are not too many surviving reminders of the railway infrastructure on this old rail route but here a platelayer hut survives. Platelayers were the people who maintained the railway track in the days of 'bullhead' rail and bolted track sections. More information about types of rail can be found here: http://www.railway-technical.com/track.shtml . The track needed continuous fettling and a gang of platelayers was allocated to each 'length' of line. The huts were used for storing tools and equipment and would also be used as messrooms. The term 'platelayer' originates from the very earliest days when the first railway systems or tramways used flat plates rather than rails, thus 'platelayer'. The term survived the transition from plates to iron rails. For more information about this walk along the Mawddach Trail, see 1083502 .
