Description
English: Sunrise at Cottonwood Cove

Coyote Buttes South is a BLM-administered area in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, located in northwestern Arizona. This photo was taken a few minutes before sunrise on October 20, 2012 in the Cottonwood Cove area. The book “Photographing the Southwest, vol. 2”, by Laurent Martres, has a photo taken from the same location on pp. 228-9. His photo was taken after sunrise. You can see the difference mainly in the character of the light on the area in the lower right. In my shot, light comes up from the bottom; in his, direct sunlight shines down from above.

If you want to get the the diffuse glow of light rising from below, you will need to leave the parking area at least one hour before sunrise; earlier would be better. Since it takes a couple of hours to get from Page, Arizona to Cottonwood Cove, camping on-site is the best option.
