Summary

[edit]
Description

The No. 7 subway train, heading into Manhattan from Flushing, passes by this train yard as it nears Queensboro Station.

This yard hosts an assortment of trains; the double-deckers are from New Jersey Transit, while the train in the front belongs to Long Island Rail Road. Also visible are the rounded Amfleet passenger rail coaches, operated by Amtrak on intercity services. Although not seen in this photo, Amtrak also parks its Acela high-speed trainsets here. It is only a short hop from here to Manhattan's Penn Station, where all of these services depart from.

In New York State, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is responsible for running the New York City subway and buses, the Long Island Rail Road, and the Metro-North Railroad. For services leaving New York State, New Jersey Transit covers destinations in New Jersey, while Metro-North's New Haven Line is run as a joint service between MTA and Connecticut Department of Transportation. Metro-North uses the Grand Central Terminal, and therefore does not use this yard.
