Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in December 2022: the sharp corner of Cayuga Street and Auburn Road at the north end of downtown Seneca Falls, New York is the site of this monument commemorating the Sullivan Expedition of 1779, a bloody Revolutionary War campaign in which John Sullivan and James Clinton, under orders of General George Washington of the Continental Army, led a band of marauders westward through what was then the American frontier, destroying settlements and farms of the British-allied Iroquois in retaliation for their raids the previous year at Wyoming, German Flatts, and Cherry Valley. The granite monument bears on each of its sides a bronze plaque inscribed with bust portraits of the two generals in bas relief, a map of their route, and breathless prose describing how the campaign "checked the aggressions of the English and Indians on the frontiers of New York and Pennsylvania, extending westward the dominion of the United States". It's one of about 35 identical monuments that, in 1929, were placed by the New York State Department of Education in various communities along the expedition's path to commemorate its 150th anniversary: newspapers from that period are replete with coverage that followed State Historian Dr. Alexander C. Flick as he crisscrossed Upstate New York, attending dedications and giving lectures.
