Summary[edit]

Description

Although its origin is debatable, it would seem that streetcar No. 8 was outshopped from the Patterson & Corbin workshops in St. Catherines, Ontario, around 1895. This firm was a leading manufacturer of Canadian streetcars in the late 19th Century. The car is equipped with a single rigid Brill E-21 truck, a popular model at that time. Most likely commissioned on the Weston branch line of the Toronto Suburban Railway, this inviting small streetcar without side walls was ideal for fine summer days. >P>

There was no centre aisle due to the use of benches with reversible backrests, so the ticket taker had to move carefully along the running board. Since it was only used in summer and much less pleasant when it rained, these streetcars were gradually withdrawn from service beginning in 1910.

Resold to the Gillies Brothers Company in Braeside, near Ottawa, this streetcar ended its career as a simple trailer bringing workers from the city to the sawmill. In 1957, it was acquired by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association, which then restored it, giving it the appearance of a streetcar from the Montreal Street Railway. This deviation from historical accuracy is an exception in the museum`s collection. On rare occasions it still runs on the streetcar loop in summer.
