Description

Strade, County Mayo, Ireland

Pelican at the opposite corbel
Relief of an eagle capturing a snake in connection with a corbel at the south pier of the chancel arc of Strade Priory. This carving was crafted c. 1440-1450. Literature: Colum Hourihane: Gothic Art in Ireland 1169-1550, Yale University Press, ISBN 0-300-09435-3, p. 108-109. Quote from p. 109: The location of this motif at the entrance to the chancel would have reminded the worshipper of Christ's sacrifice and its recreation in the Mass. The eagle and snake show the victory of Christ over his adversary and, like the pelican, would have offered hope.
