The twigs drink it and whis-per, Run along to the stems; they are just 121 THE STORY OF waiting for you/ The stems send it out tothe tip end of the leaves as they wildly waveand laugh aloud over their sweet gift, forthis water in the tree is sweet food that nour-ishes every part and is called sap/ This was a fine story, and every time itrained Jack watched the little tree, andthought he could almost hear the voicessending the moisture on and on. As time passed the tree became strongerand larger, and finally one spring day whenJack was quite a big boy he found buds onthe branches. Buds!5 he called in great excitement,and real buds they were, which the wholefamily came out to admire. The buds blossomed, and as the petalssnowed down the air was sweet with theirfragrance. When Jack found baby apples on his treehe wanted to celebrate, and Mother told him 122

That would be some-thing new, and he hastened to tell the goodnews at school. They are wonderful apples/ he said.cNo one in this part of the country has anylike them.
